Karkala: Public outrage over corruption allegations at Miyaru gram sabha

Karkala, Mar 27: The Miyaru gram sabha witnessed heated discussions as the public voiced strong dissatisfaction over allegations of corruption against panchayat development officer (PDO).

Despite multiple corruption accusations, the PDO’s working style has drawn widespread criticism from residents, who accused him of supporting illegal sand mining in unauthorized areas and accepting bribes while failing to take necessary action.

Citizens expressed frustration over preferential treatment given to wealthy individuals, such as issuing building permits and 9/11 documents based on a misclassification of national highways as state highways. Conversely, poor residents alleged that they face hurdles and bribery demands even for minor construction work, such as building a poultry shed. Complaints were raised that no official work is processed without bribes. A financial misappropriation notice has already been issued against the PDO, and residents accused him of resorting to threats when questioned about his actions. The gram sabha strongly demanded his dismissal.

Controversy over Rs 18,000 bill for biscuits

During the meeting, public anger escalated over a questionable expenditure where a bill of Rs 18,000 was paid for a simple refreshment of malt and biscuits served to officials. Additionally, concerns were raised over excessive spending on borewell pump repairs, with Rs 4 lac reportedly spent—an amount sufficient to purchase multiple new pumps. Similar allegations were made regarding inflated repair costs for ceiling fans.

Gram panchayat member Daniel Ranger criticized the president and PDO for financial misconduct, asserting that the president, already facing allegations, had no legal authority to chair the meeting. In response, member Girish Amin countered, stating that no official notice had been issued against the president and that members should raise their concerns in regular meetings rather than addressing them in public forums.

Another member defended the decision to raise corruption concerns in the gram sabha, citing a lack of response in previous panchayat meetings. He accused officials of shielding the PDO despite widespread public complaints about bribery and called for immediate suspension.

Illegal constructions & revenue department irregularities

Residents raised concerns about unauthorized construction along national highways, alleging that the revenue department had misclassified certain roads as state highways. This discrepancy led to irregular approvals of 9/11 land records. The villagers demanded that the revenue department take corrective action, either by placing a hold on such properties or revoking approvals.

The gram panchayat president, Sanmathi Nayak, and PDO Nagaraj M assured the public that the administration would investigate the issue and take appropriate action in the next regular meeting.

Infrastructure & public welfare issues discussed

The meeting also addressed various local development concerns, including the construction of drains, culverts, streetlights, and electricity connections. The discussion highlighted that a well was built at a cost of Rs 35 lac, yet villagers still faced water shortages. Residents urged the administration to ensure fair water distribution.

Delays in obtaining official documents from the panchayat office were also criticized, along with excessive expenditures on pump repairs and refreshments. Panchayat members and villagers demanded an official inquiry and appropriate action against mismanagement.

Call for investigation against the PDO

Residents accused the PDO of deliberately delaying file processing, providing misleading information, and intimidating those who questioned him. The public demanded an official investigation by higher authorities into financial irregularities. A resident named Rajesh declared, “We do not need such a corrupt and rowdy PDO,” with the gathered public echoing similar sentiments.

Highway divider causes public inconvenience

Another issue raised was the problematic placement of a highway divider in Jodukatte, which has caused significant inconvenience. School vehicles, dairy suppliers, and those visiting the panchayat office are now forced to take a longer detour of half a kilometre. Residents urged the authorities to reposition the divider for public convenience.

Betting menace & lack of police presence

The meeting also noted the absence of rural police representatives to address public grievances. Villagers voiced concerns over the rampant spread of cricket betting activities, urging law enforcement to take immediate action.

Nodal officer Vijay Nayak was present at the meeting, along with various department officials who provided updates on government schemes. However, the widespread dissatisfaction among the public remained evident throughout the session, highlighting deep-seated grievances against the panchayat administration.
