New Delhi, Mar 27: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has intensified its crackdown on substandard and counterfeit products being sold on e-commerce platforms, seizing a large number of goods without mandatory ISI certification or carrying fake ISI labels from warehouses linked to Amazon and Flipkart. The operation is part of a broader effort to enforce quality compliance and protect consumers from unsafe products, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Thursday.
In a 15-hour-long raid on March 19, BIS officials conducted a search and seizure operation at the Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd warehouse in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, Delhi. More than 3,500 electrical appliances, including geysers and food mixers, were confiscated for lacking an ISI mark or displaying fake ISI labels. The total value of the seized goods is estimated to be around ?70 lakh, as per the ministry’s statement.
A similar raid at Instakart Services Pvt Ltd, a Flipkart subsidiary in Trinagar, Delhi, uncovered 590 pairs of sports footwear that lacked the mandatory ISI certification and manufacturing details. The seized footwear, intended for dispatch, was valued at approximately ?6 lakh.
The BIS has been actively conducting such operations across multiple cities, including Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow, and Sriperumbudur, over the past month. These raids are part of a larger regulatory effort to ensure strict adherence to quality and safety standards.
Currently, 769 products fall under mandatory BIS certification, as notified by various regulatory bodies and central ministries. It is illegal to manufacture, import, distribute, sell, store, or exhibit these products without a valid BIS license or Certificate of Compliance.
Violations of these regulations are punishable under the BIS Act, 2016, which prescribes fines, imprisonment, or both for offenders.
With increasing scrutiny, the BIS aims to curb the sale of counterfeit and non-compliant goods, ensuring that consumers receive safe and high-quality products from online marketplaces.
