US airstrikes pound Houthi-controlled Yemen, several injured

Sanaa, Mar 28: The United States launched a series of airstrikes on over 40 locations across Houthi-controlled Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, in the early hours of Friday, local reports said.

According to the Houthi-linked Al Masirah broadcaster, multiple residential areas, shops, and communication networks were damaged in the strikes, which targeted provinces like Saada, Marib, al-Jawf, and Hodeidah. The attacks also hit the Sanaa International Airport and military camps in the northern Amran region. At least seven people were reported injured, including one in Sanaa.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has not yet acknowledged the raids, but recent authorizations allow offensive strikes in Yemen without prior White House approval. The latest escalation comes after the Houthis renewed threats to target Red Sea shipping lanes, citing Israel’s blockade of aid into Gaza.

UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg has urged immediate de-escalation, warning that a full-scale war would destabilize the entire region. He stressed that diplomacy remains key to resolving the decade-long conflict.

Since November 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have carried out over 100 attacks on Red Sea shipping in what they call an act of solidarity with Palestinians. Their assaults have resulted in the sinking of two vessels, the seizure of another, and the deaths of at least four seafarers, significantly disrupting global trade. The Houthis have also launched drone and missile attacks on Israel, causing casualties and damage.
