Centre cracks down on AI Deepfakes, urges social media platforms to act swiftly on harmful content

New Delhi, Apr 5: In a renewed move to tackle the growing menace of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation, the Centre has once again advised social media platforms to take immediate action against unlawful content, including synthetic media that poses serious threats to users online.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has held multiple consultations with industry stakeholders and digital platforms, reiterating the importance of compliance with the IT Rules, 2021. The aim is to ensure a safe, secure, and accountable cyberspace for Indian users.

Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, informed the Rajya Sabha that platforms have been reminded of their due diligence obligations, especially in view of the harms caused by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

“The IT Act provides for punishment of various cybercrimes including identity theft, impersonation, privacy violations, and the sharing of explicit content,” Prasada said.

He further emphasised that the Act applies to all forms of content, whether user-generated or created using AI tools. “MeitY regularly engages with the industry to ensure ethical use of such technologies and prevent misuse,” he added.

Under the IT Rules, 2021, intermediaries are strictly prohibited from hosting or publishing any unlawful content. They are also bound to act swiftly when notified about such content—either by the government or through user grievances.

To aid this process, the Government has set up Grievance Appellate Committees at www.gac.gov.in, allowing users to appeal decisions made by platform grievance officers.

Additionally, CERT-In continues to issue alerts and advisories to safeguard networks and systems from AI-powered cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

With misinformation and deepfakes becoming a growing concern, especially during sensitive times, the government’s advisory comes as a firm reminder of the need for accountability and quick action by digital platforms.
