Mangaluru, Apr 5: The district unit of the BJP, led by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, staged a protest on Saturday, April 5, against the jammer installed at Mangaluru Jail, alleging that it has been causing inconvenience to the public in nearby areas.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath, along with other BJP leaders, attempted to block the road and stage a sit-in (gherao) at the jail premises. However, police intervened and arrested the protesting leaders.

The jammer, which has been operational for several days, has reportedly disrupted communication in the vicinity, affecting local residents, shopkeepers, and businesses. Its proximity to colleges, commercial establishments, and doctors’ clinics has made it difficult for people to make emergency calls and carry out online transactions.
A local doctor had recently taken to social media to highlight the issue, citing challenges in attending to patients and responding to emergencies due to poor network connectivity.
Expressing his frustration, Vedavyas Kamath said, “I have submitted memorandums to the police commissioner, DG, and home minister, but no action has been taken. If there was a BJP government, I would have entered the jail myself and removed the jammer. If the police were functioning effectively, there would be no need for a jammer in the first place. This is what we call an anti-people administration under the Congress government.”
He further urged district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who is currently visiting Mangaluru, to address the jammer issue immediately.
