New Delhi, Apr 5: India is setting its sights on becoming a dominant force in the global maritime arena, leveraging its vast ocean resources to propel trade, opportunity, growth, and overall national progress. This ambitious vision was articulated by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal during the National Maritime Day celebrations held on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister declared, "India's maritime sector is undergoing a transformative era of unprecedented scale. Fueled by our expansive Blue Economy, state-of-the-art port infrastructure, and a future-oriented shipping ecosystem, this sector is rapidly emerging as a powerful catalyst in our journey towards a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India)."
He further emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, "National Maritime Day is a tribute to our dedicated seafarers, our vibrant coastal communities, and our unwavering resolve to forge a sustainable, secure, and globally competitive maritime future for India."
This year's theme, "Prosperous Seas – Developed India and Youth for Blue Economy and Green Growth," underscores the critical importance of environmentally responsible growth within the maritime sector and the pivotal role of young people in driving innovation and environmental stewardship.
Across the nation, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways commemorated the 62nd National Maritime Day, paying homage to India's rich maritime heritage and acknowledging the exceptional contributions of seafarers to the country's economic advancement and global connectivity.
The central celebration, organized by the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee (NMDCC), Delhi chapter, under the guidance of the Directorate General of Shipping, took place at the Vinay Marg Sports Ground in the national capital.
During the event, Minister Sonowal engaged in an informal interaction with maritime cadets, gaining insights into their aspirations and training experiences. He also met with female cadets, encouraging them to take a leading role in shaping the future trajectory of India's maritime landscape.
Reflecting on his interaction, Sonowal remarked, "Meeting the young cadets on the sidelines of National Maritime Week was truly inspiring. Their passion and commitment are a testament to the bright future of India's maritime journey. I extended my best wishes to them and commended their crucial role as nation builders through a strong, vibrant, modern, and efficient maritime sector."
The Ministry also took the opportunity to recognize outstanding contributions within the maritime sector, bestowing awards and commendations upon individuals and organizations for their dedication and achievements.
The 62nd National Maritime Day served not only as a commemoration of the legacy of India's maritime pioneers but also as a reaffirmation of the nation's commitment to a greener, more inclusive, and innovation-driven maritime future. The day holds historical significance, marking the anniversary of the maiden voyage of 'S.S. Loyalty', the first Indian-owned steamship, which sailed from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919. This landmark event signified India's entry into international shipping and laid the groundwork for the nation's proud maritime legacy.
