New Delhi, Apr 6: A young girl from West Bengal, who was trafficked and forced into prostitution in the national capital, was rescued from a brothel at GB Road by the Delhi Police following the intervention of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Priyank Kanoongo.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Kanoongo wrote, “Today, on my instructions, Delhi Police conducted a rescue operation and rescued a girl from West Bengal from a brothel in GB Road red light area.” He further stated that the operation was based on information received from the Mission Mukti Foundation.

According to the foundation, a man named Mohammad Ghazi from South 24 Parganas had lured the girl into a relationship and then trafficked her to Delhi, where she was sold into a brothel and forced into sex work.
Kanoongo, the former chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), has long been associated with issues concerning child welfare and trafficking. The NCPCR functions under the Ministry of Women and Child Development and works to ensure that laws and policies are aligned with child rights, as per the Constitution and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Despite continuous efforts by law enforcement agencies, human trafficking remains a serious challenge across India. The Ministry of Home Affairs has set up an Anti-Trafficking Cell to strengthen the legal response. This cell collaborates with various ministries and state agencies, and offers guidance, organises awareness conferences, and coordinates bilateral agreements with other countries to combat human trafficking.
Authorities continue to stress the need for vigilance and coordination to curb the menace, especially in vulnerable regions such as West Bengal.
