Parents stage protest against April reopening of schools, demand dialogue on NEP implementation

Porvorim, Apr 8: A group of concerned parents and guardians staged a silent protest outside the Directorate of Education in Porvorim on Monday, voicing strong opposition to the State government’s decision to reopen schools for the new academic year in April.

Holding placards and standing in quiet solidarity, the protesters demanded that the government initiate panel discussions involving experts on the New Education Policy (NEP), parents, teachers, and headmasters to address widespread concerns regarding its implementation.

Speaking on behalf of the group, activist Cecille Rodrigues said that multiple representations had already been made to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Director of Education, the Secretary (Education), and officials from SCERT. She pointed out that assurances had been given — most notably by Education Secretary Prasad Lolayencar — that objections would be taken up for open discussion.

“On March 5, we were promised a panel discussion, but because the matter was sub-judice at the time, it could not be conducted. Now that the high court has disposed of the writ petition, there has been complete silence from the authorities,” said Rodrigues.

She claimed that over 4,000 objections have been submitted by parents, teachers, and education stakeholders regarding the NEP. “We are not against the policy, but its implementation must be thoughtful, inclusive, and transparent,” she emphasized.

Rodrigues also criticized the government’s reasoning that since CBSE and ICSE schools function in April, other schools in the State should follow suit. “Those schools have far better infrastructure. Government and aided schools are not equipped to handle students during such harsh weather conditions,” she argued.

She added that parents are planning to submit a formal memorandum to the education secretary, reiterating the need for an immediate dialogue and reconsideration of the April reopening.

Echoing the concerns, parent Prasad Harmalkar pointed out the intense summer heat in Goa, stating that the State’s unique climate conditions make April an unsuitable time for students to attend school.

“India is a vast country with varying climates. Goa experiences extremely hot conditions in April, which could impact students’ health. The government should seriously reconsider its decision in the interest of children,” Harmalkar urged.

The protest highlights growing dissatisfaction among parents who feel that their voices are being sidelined in critical decisions affecting their children’s education.
