Bantwal: Heavy rain, strong winds cause widespread damage

Bantwal, Apr 8: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Bantwal taluk on Tuesday, April 8 evening, causing widespread damage.

In some areas, large trees were uprooted, while in many other places, banners erected for religious events were torn down. Reports also indicated that roofs of several houses, including tiled and sheeted structures, were damaged.

At Neralakatte along the Mani-Puttur National Highway, a coconut tree fell onto an electric pole and across the road, disrupting traffic for a while. A two-wheeler rider narrowly escaped mishap during the incident. Locals promptly informed MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company) and helped remove the fallen tree and the electric pole, restoring smooth vehicular movement. MESCOM reportedly suffered heavy losses due to the incident.

Elsewhere, the roof of a house belonging to Baby from Baltile village was damaged. In Navoor Maindala, a tree fell onto the house of Mary D’Souza, causing damage, while the roof of Ilyas' house in the same area was also affected. An areca tree fell onto the residence of Yashodha from Mugerapadpu, Baltile, resulting in further damage.

Additionally, the house of Mohammed Isaq from Sultan Katte in Navoor village, and the roof of Girija's house in Navoor, sustained damages, according to officials from the revenue department.

Around 4:30 pm, B C Road also experienced heavy winds, and the sudden darkening of the skies caused concern among the public.
