New Delhi, Apr 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, extended heartfelt greetings to the nation and paid glowing tribute to the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir, stating that his ideals continue to inspire and empower millions across the globe.
Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, "We all bow to Bhagwan Mahavir, who always emphasised on non-violence, truth and compassion. His ideals give strength to countless people all around the world. His teachings have been beautifully preserved and popularised by the Jain community. Inspired by Bhagwan Mahavir, they have excelled in different walks of life and contributed to societal well-being."
Marking the 2623rd birth anniversary of the 24th and final Tirthankara of Jainism, PM Modi lauded the contributions of the Jain community in carrying forward Mahavir's message of peace, spiritual discipline and service to society.
Referring to the Government's efforts in preserving India’s rich cultural and spiritual legacy, PM Modi said, "Our Government will always work to fulfil the vision of Bhagwan Mahavir. Last year, we conferred the status of Classical Language on Prakrit, a decision which received a lot of appreciation."
Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most revered festivals in Jainism, observed annually on the 13th day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra. As per ancient Jain texts, Bhagwan Mahavir was born in 599 B.C. in Kundalagrama, near modern-day Patna in Bihar.
Adding to the day’s spiritual fervour, PM Modi participated in the Navkar Mahamantra Divas held at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital. Joined by devotees from over 108 countries, the Prime Minister chanted the sacred Navkar Mahamantra, calling it a profound centre of faith and a guiding light not just spiritually but also socially.
"The Mahamantra shows the path from the self to society and presents a journey from within to the world. It is not just a chant but a life principle," the Prime Minister remarked.
In a deeply symbolic act of humility, PM Modi attended the event barefoot and chose to sit among the general public, eschewing the stage, to mark his respect for the spiritual occasion.
During the event, he also shared nine resolutions for Navkar Mahamantra Divas — a call to integrate its values into everyday life, reinforcing compassion, discipline, and service in society.
The day was observed with devotion and grandeur across the country, as followers of Jainism came together to celebrate the life and legacy of a spiritual leader whose message continues to echo through time.
