Mangaluru, Apr 12: A detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Central Maritime University in Mangaluru has been prepared and will soon be submitted to the union ministry of shipping, announced Member of Parliament (MP) Capt Brijesh Chowta.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on the topic ‘Maritime Universities’, organised by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) in Mangaluru on Friday.
“Mangaluru is the most suitable location for establishing a Central Maritime University. There is currently no better alternative. The university is proposed to be named after Rani Abbakka, and the report regarding its establishment will be submitted to the ministry shortly,” he said.

He also stressed the need to explore the potential for shipbuilding and ship repair industries in Mangaluru as a means to strengthen the economy. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating for port-led development in India. The recent Union Budget announced a shipbuilding cluster and a maritime development fund to support the country’s maritime sector. Mangaluru holds immense potential in this regard. Ports and the maritime industry will play a major role in realising the vision of a developed India,” he added.
Chowta further informed that all necessary preparations are underway at the departmental level to jointly prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the development of both the National Highway and railway routes along the Mangaluru-Bengaluru corridor via Shiradi Ghat.
