Mapusa, Apr 12: A major fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at Wee Care 24x7 Supermarket located behind Alankar Theatre in Angod, Mapusa, causing extensive damage and losses estimated in lakhs of rupees.

The blaze, suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, erupted around 4.30 am. Two employees on night duty spotted smoke and flames and attempted to douse the fire but were forced to evacuate as it quickly intensified.

Firefighters from the Mapusa Fire Station, led by Ganesh Govekar, rushed to the spot and battled the flames for nearly an hour before successfully bringing the situation under control. Their swift action prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

The fire gutted groceries, cosmetics, soft drinks, and electronic equipment, including those at the billing counter. A two-wheeler parked inside the premises was also destroyed. The store’s interiors were severely damaged, with many items reduced to ashes.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Authorities have launched an investigation to confirm the cause and assess the extent of the damage.
