Raigad Fort, Apr 12: In a powerful address from the historic Raigad Fort on the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared that the state government will soon implement stringent laws to penalize anyone who disrespects national icons, particularly the revered Maratha king.

Responding to demands made by Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Shivaji Maharaj, for strict punishment against such acts, Fadnavis stated, “Though he suggested that those who insult Shivaji Maharaj should be thrown off the fort, we live in a democracy. Hence, we will introduce strong legal measures instead.”

The commemoration was attended by top leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, as well as descendants of the Maratha king — Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale and Shivendraraje Bhosale.

Reaffirming the state's stand, Fadnavis declared, “We will not tolerate any form of insult toward our national heroes and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.” He also announced plans to publish an official historical record of Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy.

Touching on the ongoing legal efforts regarding Shivaji Maharaj's proposed memorial, the Chief Minister assured that the government is actively pursuing the case in the High Court.

In an emotional tribute, Fadnavis described Shivaji Maharaj as a divine force during a time of foreign dominance. “During an age ruled by the Mughals, Adilshahis, and Qutbshahis, Shivaji Maharaj emerged like a rising sun, a beacon of hope blessed by Jijau Mata. Without him, our identity would be lost,” he said.

He also highlighted the Maratha king’s role in unifying the people across castes, forging a collective spirit that led to the birth of Hindavi Swarajya. “It was Shivaji Maharaj who sowed the seeds of saffron rule across India,” he added.

The Chief Minister further revealed plans to collaborate with the Union Home Minister to construct a grand memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in New Delhi.

On the international front, Fadnavis shared that 12 forts associated with Shivaji Maharaj have been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. “A formal presentation will be made in France, and we’re optimistic about receiving global recognition for these historic sites,” he concluded.
