Madrid, Apr 15: Real Madrid will need another memorable comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday (IST) to overturn a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal.
In the first leg at the Emirates, Arsenal's Declan Rice scored twice from stunning free kicks, and Mikel Merino added a third with a smart finish, leaving Real Madrid with a mountain to climb if they are to progress to the semi-finals.
However, Madrid has built a reputation for producing dramatic comebacks at home, especially in recent seasons. Notable moments include two late goals to knock Bayern Munich out last year and a sensational two-minute brace from Rodrygo in the previous season that forced extra time against Manchester City, when Madrid had looked out of the tie.
While Real Madrid has the attacking talent to turn the tie around, including the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham, recent performances have been inconsistent. The team struggled in a narrow 1-0 win against bottom-of-the-table Alaves and suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Valencia the week prior.
Midfielder Dani Ceballos could be available for selection after recovering from injury, while Aurelien Tchouameni is expected to return following his suspension. Coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to make several tactical changes, including playing Fran Garcia at left-back after David Alaba's difficult outing against Arsenal's Bukayo Saka. Lucas Vazquez will shift to right-back, with Fede Valverde moving into midfield, potentially leaving Luka Modric on the bench.
Arsenal, meanwhile, is grappling with its own injury issues. Midfielder Thomas Partey is a doubt after picking up a knock in Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Brentford, and Jorginho is also uncertain after taking a heavy hit to the ribs. Long-term absentees Gabriel, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus are still unavailable.
Despite the injuries, Arsenal remains the favourite to progress, with coach Mikel Arteta stressing the importance of staying composed. "A goal for Madrid will spark belief," Arteta said. "We need to keep our heads cool in what promises to be a challenging night."
Real Madrid’s hopes now rest on their ability to create another Bernabeu miracle, but with the tie still very much alive, anything is possible.
