Mangaluru, Apr 25: TLC Art Cafe, in association with OUT OF INDIA is proud to announce a special screening of the critically acclaimed Konkani film 'Nachom-ia Kumpasar' in Mangaluru on Saturday April 26 at 6.30 pm at the PVR INOX Theatre.
‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ is a Konkani feature film with English sub-titles - a tribute to Goan Music and its legendary musicians. Narrated through the emotional roller-coaster of a love story destined for tragedy, it celebrates Goan music through the eyes of its prodigiously eclectic generation of musicians in the 1960s and 70s.

This vibrant film directed by Bardroy Barretto pays homage to the rich musical heritage of Goa and its often-overlooked musicians. The bitter sweet relationship between a young singer and her musician mentor set against the backdrop of the jazz clubs of Bombay and the musicians from Goa during those years.
Nachom-ia Kumpasar beautifully weaves together music, drama, and romance, capturing the essence of Goan culture and its unique musical traditions.
The film stars Vijay Maurya as Lawrence and Palomi Ghosh as Dona. Lawrence is a jazz trumpeter and songwriter who finds in the talented Dona the perfect voice for his band. Their mutual passion threatens their professional partnership, especially since Lawrence is married and is unable to leave his wife for Dona.
Nachom-ia Kumpasar’s soundtrack, with 20 reimagined Konkani classics by Chris Perry, immerses viewers in the vibrant 1960s–70s Goan music scene. Celebrating musicians who shaped Bollywood’s Golden Era (1940s–60s) with jazz-infused rhythms, the film challenges mainstream narratives, ensuring their legacy is no longer overlooked.
TLC Art Cafe is a vibrant space dedicated to promoting art, culture, scientific enquiry and discourse through various community engagement events and initiatives. TLC Art Cafe is delighted to host this award-winning film in Mangaluru that celebrates the power of music in bringing communities together and preserving cultural heritage.
MUSIC & MEMORY® INITIATIVE IN MANGALORE
The screening of Nachom-ia-Kumpasar builds on a unique programme that the SILVER CIRCLE a volunteer care givers group in Mangaluru launched at TLC Art Café in May last year with celebrated Goan performers Sonia Shirsat, Allan Abreu and Carlton Braganza.
Therapeutic benefits of personalized music improve quality of life for seniors living with dementia and other types of physical and cognitive limitations. Studies show that listening to one’s favourite music helps reduce depression and anxiety, and can also moderate chronic pain. Participants are happier, more social, and receptive to care and family visits. Personalized music can also help to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic, anti-anxiety, and pain medications.
Grounded in research about how brains respond to music, the program offers participants the opportunity to benefit from the therapeutic potential of music to tap deep memories and reconnect with the world.
Harriet Silva Vidyasagar, director of this programme, who has been a primary care giver for over two decades is working closely with the USA non-profit organization MUSIC & MEMORY® to bring the Certification Training to other care givers in India. The pilot project has been initiated in collaboration with the Susheg Jivith Trust at their Dementia Centre.
This special screening was made possible through the efforts of Harriet Silva Vidyasagar, who coordinated and organized the event in collaboration with director Bardroy Barretto and his team at OUT OF INDIA. Her initiative and commitment brought this poignant tribute to Goan music and culture to the Mangalurean audience. Harriet is seen here with the director during a planning meeting for the screening.
With the help of volunteer music-lovers in the community, TLC Art Cafe are excited about the benefits that this programme will bring to residents in the community. It will also be an exciting opportunity and journey to collect and curate old music personalized playlists in local languages to add to the existing free global music repository.
