Goa, Apr 27: Seventeen Pakistani nationals residing in Goa on long-term visas are currently safe from deportation, as most of them are married to Indian citizens, reliable sources have confirmed to The Goan. Of these, 12 are based in North Goa, and five are in South Goa. The state government is monitoring their movements, with precautions in place, particularly following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
While these long-term visa holders, many of whom are employed in government sectors, cannot be deported without a directive from the Government of India, authorities are closely watching them. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized that their movements will be carefully observed, but no immediate action is being taken.
Meanwhile, the Centre’s deadline for the deportation of three Pakistani nationals on short-term visas ends on April 27. The state government is proceeding with their expulsion as per the directives.
In response to the heightened security concerns, Goa police and armed forces have increased safety measures across key locations. Sources revealed that public areas, including transport hubs, are seeing reinforced security with day and night checkpoints (nakabandis) deployed for vigilance. Railway stations are also under close scrutiny, with un-ticketed persons being removed, and luggage checks for suspicious items.
Special operations targeting areas with high migrant populations were carried out last Friday and Saturday. The district police detained 28 individuals under preventive action. Police combing operations were conducted across various locations, including Camrabhat, Miramar, St Cruz, Mapusa, Arpora, and Baga, while nakabandis took place at 29 strategic points in North Goa.
As part of these operations, a total of 770 tenants were verified, 325 domestic workers were checked, and 666 suspicious persons were rounded up for further investigation.
