Srinagar, Apr 27: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the need for a resolute fight against terrorism but warned against actions that might alienate innocent people. His remarks came in the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists and a local resident, Syed Adil, on April 22.
In a statement on X, Omar Abdullah expressed that, while terrorism must be confronted decisively, the people of Kashmir had already shown their firm rejection of terrorism, openly condemning the attack. He said, “After the Pahalgam terror attack, there must be a decisive fight against terrorism and its origin. People of Kashmir have come out openly against terrorism and the murder of innocent people, they did this freely and spontaneously.”

The Chief Minister called for building on this public support while ensuring that the innocent do not bear the brunt of any retaliatory actions. “Punish the guilty, show them no mercy but don’t let innocent people become collateral damage,” he added.
He also voiced concerns over attacks on Kashmiris outside Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the importance of safeguarding them during this turbulent period. In response, Omar Abdullah directed his cabinet colleagues to visit different states to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students and businessmen. Various state governments have pledged their support and set up helplines to assist the community.
The tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22 has left the entire region in shock. While condemning the violence, the people of J&K, including various religious, political, and social groups, unitedly called for strong punishment for the terrorists responsible. The attack marked a significant moment of protest, with a shutdown observed on April 23, the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Among the victims was Syed Adil, a local man who heroically attempted to disarm one of the attackers before being killed. Adil’s death, the only local casualty, highlighted the personal cost of the violence, as he was the sole breadwinner for his elderly parents.
As Kashmiris around the country expressed their grief and anger over the attack, some elements targeted Kashmiris in other parts of India, further adding to the emotional strain. Omar Abdullah’s statement underscores the delicate balance needed to ensure justice is served while protecting the vulnerable members of the Kashmiri community both within and outside the region.
