Panaji, Apr 29: A group of concerned heritage activists, operating under the banner Citizens for Democracy Goa, has sounded the alarm over alleged unregulated construction activity in the vicinity of Old Goa’s sacred UNESCO World Heritage site.
In a petition addressed to the Union Ministry of Culture, the group has called for immediate central intervention to halt what they describe as “rampant construction” taking place within a one-kilometre radius of the protected heritage zone.
Citing a steady rise in violations that threaten the sanctity and structural integrity of the centuries-old precinct, the activists expressed fear that such unchecked development could irreparably harm Goa’s cultural legacy.
Old Goa, once the heart of Portuguese India and home to iconic landmarks like the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Activists argue that continued neglect or compromise of protective norms undermines not just local history but India’s global cultural commitment.
The petition has sparked renewed calls for transparency and accountability from local authorities and has urged the Centre to enforce stringent heritage conservation laws in the area.
