Amaravati, Apr 30: A devastating road accident on the Mumbai National Highway near Potireddypalem in Nellore district claimed six lives, including five second-year MBBS students from Narayana Medical College, and left one student critically injured.

The incident occurred when the car, carrying the students back from a friend's sister’s engagement in Buchhireddypalem, lost control, flipped multiple times, and crashed into a roadside house near a petrol station in Kovur mandal.

The six medicos were severely injured and rushed to a private hospital in Nellore. Five of them succumbed to their injuries, while Navneet Shankar from Kadapa is reportedly in stable condition.

The victims have been identified as Jeevan Chandra Reddy (Nellore), Naresh Naik (Anantapur), Abhishek Raj (Anantapur), Abhishashi Purshottam (Tirupati), and Yagnesh (Prakasam).

A local resident, Venkata Ramanaiah (50), was killed on the spot when the out-of-control car ploughed into his home.

Locals and emergency services, including 108 ambulance personnel, responded swiftly, but the injuries proved fatal for most of the young passengers.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences, promising all possible support to the families. Former CM and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also mourned the incident, calling it “heartbreaking” and underscoring the urgent need for stricter road safety measures.
