Mumbai, May 1: In a major step to reclaim public land and improve railway safety, authorities removed over 80 unauthorised slum structures from Borivali East in a massive anti-encroachment operation jointly conducted by central and city enforcement agencies.

The demolition drive was executed between kilometre markers 34/18 and 35/05 on the eastern stretch of Borivali, targeting illegal hutments that had mushroomed on railway land. Of these, 43 structures were cleared specifically from the East side, officials confirmed.

The pre-planned operation was part of the Mumbai Division’s initiative to safeguard railway property, and was carried out with tight coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and Mumbai City Police.

Demolition activities were carried out under the supervision of the SSE (Works/Land) from the Engineering Department. Two large hutments made of iron sheets and bamboo were dismantled, with materials later seized and stored in the departmental godown by the Inspector of Works (IOW).

A robust force of 110 personnel, including teams from the Maharashtra Security Force and Home Guards, ensured a peaceful and orderly execution of the drive, with no law and order disruptions reported.

“This is part of a wider ongoing initiative to protect railway property and maintain safety for passengers and train operations,” an official stated. The removal of illegal structures near railway lines is also aimed at preventing potential hazards and delays in railway movement.
