Panaji, May 6: In a significant step towards inclusivity and social justice, the Goa Government has announced the formation of a 14-member Model Transgender Welfare Board, aimed at ensuring the protection and empowerment of transgender persons in the state.

The board, constituted under the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and the Rules of 2020, will be headed by the State Chief Secretary. Its mandate is to oversee and facilitate the implementation of welfare schemes and policies dedicated to the transgender community.

The newly formed body will serve as a pivotal mechanism to address the challenges faced by transgender persons in Goa and to ensure their rights are protected across various sectors including healthcare, education, employment, and housing.

Officials stated that the formation of the board aligns with the government’s commitment to building an inclusive and equitable society where every individual, irrespective of gender identity, receives equal opportunities and dignity.

Further details regarding the board’s operational framework, member representation from the transgender community, and upcoming initiatives are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
