Maharashtra leaders clash over Operation Sindoor: Praise, patriotism, and political tensions unfold

Mumbai, May 7: The recent military offensive by India, dubbed Operation Sindoor, targeting terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), has triggered a political storm in Maharashtra. While leaders of the ruling Mahayuti alliance hailed the move as a show of decisive leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, voices from the Opposition benches urged caution against politicising the armed forces’ success.

In a strongly worded post on X, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saluted the forces with a patriotic cry: “Jai Hind. Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” The operation was carried out in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives and reignited public anger across the nation.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, echoing the sentiment, stated: “This strike has avenged the innocent lives lost in Pahalgam. Operation Sindoor is not just a military mission, it’s a message — India is a peace-loving nation, but it will not hesitate to act with force when provoked.” Shinde further added that the Modi government's resolve was reflected in the operation's swiftness and precision.

However, the Opposition parties struck a more reserved tone. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut warned against politicising the armed forces’ achievement. “Credit for this operation goes to the Indian Army, not to any political party. If leaders want to claim success, they must also accept responsibility for the failures that led to Pahalgam,” he said.

Raut further questioned the Union Home Ministry's accountability, remarking, “If the Prime Minister truly wanted to demonstrate leadership, he should have sought the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah after the attack. The real heroes are those who operate on the frontlines, not those who claim glory from afar.”

Echoing similar views, MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated: “Our forces have dismantled Pakistan’s terror infrastructure. This is not just a strike—it’s a clean-up operation inside enemy territory.”

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray raised concerns over internal lapses. “The focus should be on why there was a security breakdown in Pahalgam in the first place. Airstrikes are reactive. We must strengthen proactive internal security,” he remarked.

As Operation Sindoor continues to dominate headlines, the political landscape in Maharashtra mirrors the nation’s collective emotions — a blend of patriotic fervour, grief, and demand for greater accountability. The mission has brought India’s defence capabilities to the forefront while simultaneously reigniting the debate on the fine line between national security and political mileage.
