Panaji, May 9: Amid heightened national security concerns, Goa conducted a large-scale civil defence drill, ‘Operation Abhyaas’, on Tuesday, simulating emergency scenarios including a mock collapse of the Mandovi bridge. Air sirens, selective blackouts, and the deployment of rescue teams marked the state's heightened preparedness.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that both North and South Goa have been placed on high alert. “Goa is a coastal state... Coast Guard, police and others are on alert,” he said after a cabinet meeting.

Held under the ministry of Home Affairs’ direction, the exercise was part of a nationwide drill spanning 244 locations, following recent terror attacks in Pahalgam. In North Goa, drills were held at the Indian National Watersports Centre, Panaji Ferry Wharf, and Goa Glass Fibre Ltd, Colvale. The Mandovi bridge collapse simulation tested the efficiency of agencies in evacuation, rescue, and mass casualty response.

In South Goa, similar drills were conducted at the Margao railway station, IOCL Vasco terminal, and Dabolim. Hundreds of personnel from police, fire services, civil defence, and district administration participated.

The government stated the drill aimed to evaluate emergency response systems, inter-agency coordination, and public awareness. CM Sawant also urged citizens to stay alert and follow emergency updates broadcast through radio and TV.
