Father Muller Medical College Hospital marks valedictory of Nurses Week 2025

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 10: The valedictory ceremony of the Nurses Week 2025, commemorating International Nurses Day (May 12), was celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence at Father Muller Medical College Hospital on Saturday, May 10.

The theme for this year, “Our nurses our future - caring for nurses strengthens economies,” underscored the vital role played by nurses in healthcare and nation-building.

The day began with a solemn thanksgiving mass at St Joseph Chapel, officiated by Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho. In his homily, Fr Coelho reflected on the message of true belief and trust highlighted in the gospel. He drew a profound connection between faith and nursing, remarking that a patient’s trust in the nurse often precedes faith in the doctor, underlining the sacred responsibility entrusted to nurses.

The formal valedictory function commenced with a soulful prayer song seeking divine blessings. Dignitaries were warmly welcomed and led to the dais. The occasion was graced by the presence of Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions; chief guest Dr Lulu Sheriff; Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, administrator; Dr Uday Kumar, medical superintendent; Sr Nancy Priya Mathias, CNO; and Sr Dhanya Devasia, principal, Father Muller School and College of Nursing.

A gesture of deep respect was observed as the gathering paid floral tribute to the founders — Fr Augustus Muller and Florence Nightingale — by garlanding their portraits, honouring their legacy in the field of healthcare.

A notable highlight of the event was the felicitation of veteran nurse Sr Lucy Dsouza, acknowledged for her decades-long compassionate service. Her heartfelt message deeply resonated with the audience, particularly inspiring the younger nursing fraternity.

Addressing the gathering, chief guest Dr Lulu Sheriff hailed the unwavering commitment of nurses who form the backbone of the healthcare system. She stressed the economic and social significance of the profession and urged continuous learning and development among nurses.

Fr Richard Coelho, in his presidential address, encouraged the gathering with his words on the dignity and grace found in selfless service.

The programme also featured the distribution of awards recognising outstanding nursing service and academic excellence. Nurses completing 20 years of dedicated service were honoured, along with Prescilla D’Souza, recipient of the prestigious Nightingale Award 2024, celebrated for her exceptional dedication.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and the rendition of the institutional anthem. The formal function was followed by a vibrant cultural session that added a festive touch to the occasion.

A celebratory lunch was hosted for all nursing staff and invitees at the cafeteria, marking a joyous end to a memorable day.
