Amritsar, May 13: In a tragic incident, twelve people have died after consuming spurious liquor in the Majitha area of Amritsar. Authorities reported the deaths on Tuesday, confirming that the victims were from various nearby villages, including Bhangali, Marari Kalan, and Tharieval. Six individuals, including the main supplier and the alleged kingpin of the illicit liquor network, have been arrested following the incident.

The victims, most of whom were youths, reportedly consumed the tainted liquor on Sunday evening. Several others are still in critical condition, and the death toll is expected to rise. Local residents cremated some of the deceased on Monday morning without informing the authorities, delaying the investigation.

Majitha's Station House Officer (SHO) Aabtaab Singh confirmed that a thorough investigation was launched after the police were alerted about the deaths. "Preliminary investigations indicate that all the victims consumed liquor from the same source. Our probe has expanded, and we are now investigating further across state borders to track down the suppliers of the spurious liquor," Singh said.

Among the arrested individuals was Prabhjit Singh, identified as the primary supplier of the illicit liquor. Sahib Singh, the alleged kingpin of the distribution network, was apprehended from Rajasansi. In addition to them, four others who had helped distribute the spurious liquor to the villages were also arrested.

Police have extended their search beyond Punjab, focusing on other states where they suspect the liquor may have been sourced from. The investigation is ongoing.
