New Delhi, May 16: The Supreme Court is scheduled to take up a petition today filed by Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, who has come under fire for his controversial remarks against Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The minister has approached the apex court seeking a stay on an FIR lodged against him, which was earlier upheld by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The case has triggered widespread public attention, particularly due to the involvement of a decorated woman officer of the Indian Army.

In a key international engagement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will lead an official Indian delegation to the United States for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral trade ties. The discussions are expected to pave the way for an enhanced economic partnership between the two democracies.

Meanwhile, in the United States, Hadi Matar — the accused who attacked celebrated author Salman Rushdie in 2022, leaving him blind in one eye — is scheduled to be sentenced today. The brutal incident had sent shockwaves across the global literary and human rights community.

On the diplomatic front, representatives from Iran will meet with several European counterparts in Istanbul today to deliberate on the future of the 2015 nuclear agreement. The discussions come amidst growing uncertainty surrounding the deal, which has seen minimal progress in recent years.
