Udupi, May 20: Heavy rainfall that began early Tuesday, May 20 morning has once again triggered artificial flooding along the crucial Udupi-Manipal Road, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

The road stretch near INOX and Bacchus Inn in Manipal was completely submerged, resembling a flowing river, forcing many vehicles to divert and find alternative routes to reach Manipal from Udupi.

This stretch of road is a vital link between Udupi and the bustling educational and healthcare hub of Manipal. However, due to lack of a proper drainage system, the rainwater accumulated rapidly, turning the busy highway into a waterlogged zone. The forceful flow of rainwater on the road posed a serious risk, particularly for two-wheeler riders, many of whom were seen struggling to control their vehicles as the water levels rose. Even four-wheelers and heavy vehicles found it extremely difficult to navigate the submerged road.

The disruption began early in the morning, coinciding with the peak hours when employees, students, and hospital visitors commute to Manipal. With no other option, many had to take longer alternate routes, resulting in traffic congestion and delays.

The flow of water was so strong near the INOX junction that it created flooding in certain low-lying spots. Artificial flooding in the area, which has become a routine problem during the monsoon season, yet no permanent solution has been implemented.

Despite the increasing traffic volume and population density in Manipal, drainage improvements have remained stagnant. The water logging also disrupted the business activities here.

With Manipal being a major educational and medical hub attracting thousands of people daily, this issue must be immediately addressed and provided with a solution.
