Gold smuggling row: Actress Ranya Rao granted bail, court bars travel abroad

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 20: Actress Ranya Rao, arrested in connection with a high-profile gold smuggling case, has been granted conditional bail by the Special Court for Economic Offences.

The court has also extended bail to Tarun Kondaraju, the second accused in the case. Both accused had moved bail applications citing that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had failed to file a chargesheet within 60 days of their arrest. Taking note of this lapse, the court approved bail with strict conditions.

Bail has been granted on submission of two sureties and a bond of Rs 2 lac. The court has explicitly instructed both accused not to leave the country and warned them against involvement in any similar illegal activities. Advocate Girish appeared for Ranya Rao and presented arguments in her defence.

Ranya Rao was taken into custody for allegedly smuggling 14 kilos of gold, valued at Rs 12 crore, from Dubai to Bengaluru. Her earlier bail pleas had been dismissed by both the High Court and the Magistrate Court.
