Chennai, May 21: In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the police force, a 40-year-old head constable attached to the Taramani Police Station died by suicide after setting himself ablaze near the Taramani MRTS railway station on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Senthil, was reportedly distressed over a departmental inquiry he was to face later in the day in connection with a drunk driving accident.

A native of Nagapattinam, Senthil was part of the Law-and-Order Wing and lived with his family at the police quarters in Alandur. On Tuesday night, Senthil allegedly drove his car under the influence of alcohol and collided with a two-wheeler on the Maduvankarai flyover. The rider, 54-year-old Murugesan, was flung off the flyover and seriously injured. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Government Royapettah Hospital.
Police sources said Senthil tried to flee the scene but was intercepted by alert citizens near the Kathipara flyover. Guindy Traffic Investigation Wing personnel conducted preliminary checks and confirmed alcohol consumption. He was issued a notice to appear for an inquiry at 11 am on Wednesday.
Adding to the pressure, videos of the accident and his attempt to escape were widely circulated on social media, bringing public scrutiny and embarrassment.
On Wednesday morning, Senthil reported for duty as usual. However, before attending the inquiry, he stopped near the Taramani MRTS station, allegedly siphoned petrol from his two-wheeler, and set himself ablaze. Shocked passersby alerted fire and rescue services. Though he was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, he was declared brought dead.
Top police officials have launched a probe into the incident. The department is also expected to review its internal processes, particularly the support systems available to personnel facing disciplinary action.
