Bhopal, May 23: The Union Government has officially appointed Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, who demits office on May 23.
A notification issued under Article 223 of the Constitution of India confirmed that Justice Sachdeva will assume charge as Acting Chief Justice on May 24. The order, issued on Thursday, marks a significant development in the judicial administration of the state.

Justice Sachdeva’s journey in the legal fraternity began in 1988 with his enrolment as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. Over a distinguished career, he has represented clients before the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, and various subordinate courts in the national capital.
By 1995, he earned the rare distinction of becoming an Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court. Known for his legal acumen, Justice Sachdeva served as Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India for over two decades and as a Senior Panel Lawyer for the Union of India, where he handled a wide range of significant cases for more than 10 years.
His contributions were formally recognised when he was designated a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in July 2011. In April 2013, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court and was made permanent in March 2015.
Justice Sachdeva’s transfer to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 30, 2024, brought with it a wealth of experience and a reputation for balanced and reasoned judgments. His elevation as Acting Chief Justice is seen as a move to ensure continuity and uphold the judiciary’s integrity in the state.
With his rich legal background and decades of service to justice, his tenure is expected to provide stability, efficiency, and wisdom in the functioning of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
