New York, May 25: In a chilling early morning incident that has sent shockwaves through the NYPD ranks, a 27-year-old off-duty housing officer was viciously attacked and robbed by two masked assailants in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx on Saturday.
The shocking assault took place around 4:10 am on St. Peters Avenue, moments after the officer, still in uniform, finished his shift and was walking toward his vehicle. According to reports, two men dressed entirely in black ambushed the officer, beating him severely and snatching his gun belt containing his service weapon from inside his vehicle.
The assailants didn't stop there. As the officer lay on the ground, he was kicked repeatedly in the head, suffering a fractured eye socket among other injuries. The attackers also made away with several personal items including his wallet, NYPD and personal mobile phones, and identification cards.
During the attack, the officer was reportedly on a phone call with a colleague. Distressingly, he was heard pleading for his life, saying “Don’t shoot me! I’m a cop!” before the attackers fled the scene.
The injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition was later declared stable.
NYPD officials have launched an intensive investigation, treating the case as part of a broader crime pattern involving robberies in the Bronx. Authorities are scanning surveillance footage and urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
The incident has raised deep concerns about growing violence targeting law enforcement personnel, even off-duty, and has added urgency to ongoing discussions about officer safety and crime escalation in the borough.
Law enforcement agencies citywide have been placed on high alert, as the hunt continues for the masked duo who carried out the brazen pre-dawn assault.
