Gumi, May 28: India delivered a stellar performance on the second day of the Asian Athletics Championships 2025, highlighted by a gold medal in the 4x400m mixed relay. The Indian team — Santhosh Kumar Tamilasaran, Rupal, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalayizhu, and Subha Venkatesan — clocked 3:18.12 to secure first place, ahead of China (3:20.52) and Sri Lanka (3:21.95).
This gold marked India’s second at the ongoing continental event and capped a successful day with a total of six medals, pushing the country’s overall tally to eight at the end of Day 2.
Rupal Chaudhary, who also contributed to the relay win, began the day by clinching silver in the women’s 400m, finishing with a time of 52.68s behind Japan’s Nanaku Matsumoto (52.17s). Uzbekistan’s Jonbibi Hukmova took bronze (52.79s), while India’s Vithya Ramraj finished fifth.
Yoonus Shah added a bronze in the men’s 1500m event with a time of 3:43.03s. Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa (3:42.56s) and Korea’s Jaeung Lee (3:42.79s) secured gold and silver respectively.
In the women’s 1500m, Pooja earned silver with a strong finish at 4:10.83s, narrowly trailing China’s Li Chunhui (4:10.58s). Lili Das of India placed fourth at 4:13.81s.
India also claimed a silver in men’s triple jump through Praveen Chithravel, who leaped 16.90m. He followed China’s Zhu Yaming (17.06m) and edged out Korea’s Gyumin Yu (16.82m). Defending champion Abdulla Aboobacker missed the podium, finishing fourth at 16.72m.
Tejaswin Shankar etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Indian to win two decathlon medals at the Asian Athletics Championships, claiming silver with 7,618 points — building on his bronze from 2023.
On Day 1, Servin Sebastian opened India’s account with a bronze in the men’s 20km race walk, followed by Gulveer Singh’s gold in the men’s 10,000m — India’s first at the tournament — and Rupal’s earlier silver in the 400m.
With over 60 Indian athletes in action across 30 medal events, the team aims to build on the momentum from the previous edition held in Bangkok. The 26th edition of the Championships features participation from more than 2,000 athletes representing 43 nations.
