Bengaluru, May 31: Amid a growing number of Covid-19 cases across Karnataka, the Health and Family Welfare Department has swung into action by launching a dedicated public helpline (1800 425 8330) and issuing new precautionary guidelines for schools.
Fresh school guidelines issued
To ensure student safety, the department has mandated the following for all schools:
• Students exhibiting symptoms like cold, cough, or fever must stay at home and receive medical attention.
• Children should return to school only after full recovery and when there are no remaining symptoms.
• If symptoms emerge during school hours, parents must be notified immediately, and the child sent home.
• Teachers and staff should avoid attending school when unwell.
• Schools are directed to follow strict hygiene protocols, including the use of sanitisers, regular hand washing, and social distancing.

The state has registered 234 active Covid cases, with reports indicating a steep rise in urban zones. Alongside Covid, there is also a surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases, exceeding 20,000. Zones such as Mahadevapura, East Zone, and South Zone are witnessing a notable uptick in respiratory illnesses.
With the monsoon bringing heightened risk, BBMP health officials have intensified efforts to raise awareness about dengue, especially in vulnerable localities.
Helpline launched for public assistance
The Health Department has activated a toll-free helpline (1800 425 8330) to assist citizens. The helpline offers:
• Health advice for those with symptoms like fever, cough, or breathing difficulties.
• Testing guidance for ILI and SARI cases.
• Support for managing co-infections during the rainy season.
• A channel to report international travelers to health authorities.
Public safety guidelines
Authorities have urge citizens to:
• Wear masks in public spaces.
• Maintain hand hygiene and use sanitizers frequently.
• Avoid large gatherings and adhere to social distancing.
• Seek immediate medical attention if symptomatic.
• Get tested without delay if advised.
Advisory for healthcare facilities
Hospitals and healthcare personnel have received the following instructions:
• 5% of ILI cases must be tested daily.
• High-risk groups (elderly, pregnant women, and children) should be prioritized.
• Covid case data must be updated daily on the health portal.
• The Infection Control Committee at each hospital must actively monitor Covid protocols.
