Mumbai, Jun 8: After a remarkable IPL 2025 campaign with Punjab Kings, star batter Shreyas Iyer has reportedly emerged as a serious contender to become India’s next white-ball captain, according to a report in The Indian Express.
The 29-year-old, who lifted the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 but later faced criticism as a “remote-controlled” skipper allegedly overshadowed by Gautam Gambhir, silenced doubters this season with sharp leadership and consistent form for Punjab.
While India currently juggles three captains — Shubman Gill in Tests, Rohit Sharma in ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is — BCCI insiders suggest a streamlined leadership approach is inevitable. “He [Iyer] just plays ODIs now, but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20Is or even Tests. He has officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying.
With Rohit Sharma’s ODI future uncertain, especially after his recent exits from T20Is and Tests, Iyer’s name is reportedly high on the list for a long-term leadership role in the limited-overs setup.
Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles to secure a consistent ODI spot may have weakened his chances, further opening the door for Iyer. His composed on-field decision-making and strong middle-order performances have impressed selectors and fans alike.
As Indian cricket looks towards stability and continuity, Shreyas Iyer's rise could mark a new chapter in the team’s white-ball journey.
