Panaji, Jun 9: A day after Goa health minister Vishwajit Rane ordered the suspension of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Chief Medical Officer Dr Rudresh Kuttikar, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stepped in on Sunday to overrule the decision, assuring that the doctor would not face suspension.
Taking to social media, CM Sawant said, “I have reviewed the issue at GMC and held discussions with the Health Minister. I want to assure the people of Goa that Dr Rudresh Kuttikar will not be suspended.” He further emphasized the state’s commitment to upholding healthcare standards and appreciated the dedicated efforts of medical professionals.
The controversy erupted after a video of Rane reprimanding Dr Kuttikar went viral. During an inspection at GMC on Saturday, Rane allegedly reacted to a complaint that a senior citizen was denied an injection. In the video, the minister was seen angrily ordering Dr Kuttikar’s removal, telling hospital authorities to ‘kick him out.’
The Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) strongly condemned Rane’s outburst, calling it “deeply unprofessional,” and demanded a public apology. GARD also sought government assurance against such treatment of healthcare workers and called for a ban on videography inside clinical areas.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Goa, has demanded the immediate dismissal of Rane. NSUI president Naushad Chowdhari stated, “His behaviour violates all standards of public conduct and sets a horrific example for young professionals.”
Chowdhari added that failure to act against Rane would signal a dangerous tolerance of power misuse and disrespect toward professionals. NSUI has even written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking intervention.
The Goa chapter of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association also raised concern, warning that such ministerial conduct could encourage hostility against healthcare professionals.
