New Delhi, Jun 9: With India set to open their World Test Championship (2025–27) campaign with a five-match Test series against England, senior players and former cricketers have emphasized the need for patience, adaptability, and strong leadership as the team enters a new era under skipper Shubman Gill.

Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara, sharing his thoughts via a release by Sony Sports Network, underlined the value of discipline and teamwork ahead of the tough English tour. “Every player will need to contribute and respect the challenges that lie ahead,” he said. “As someone who understands English conditions, I believe discipline, patience, and mutual support will be crucial.”

The series, beginning at Headingley on June 20, marks India’s first Test series since the retirement of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Former India women's team coach WV Raman noted that the new-look batting line-up faces a stern test in conditions that traditionally favour swing and seam. “Composure and resolve will help them turn this tough tour into a stepping stone,” he said.

Former cricketer Hemang Badani highlighted the key role of senior batter KL Rahul, who has shown good form in recent matches. “He needs to hold the batting together and support Gill in leadership. The UK tour is a real chance for the young brigade to show their character,” Badani noted.

Rahul’s experience and recent performances for India ‘A’ including scores of 116 and 51 against England Lions add weight to his expected leadership role on the field.

The Test series will also feature matches at iconic venues including Edgbaston (July 2), Lord’s (July 10), Old Trafford (July 23), and The Oval (July 31).

Former selector Saba Karim added that the England series will test not just skills but mental resilience. “If the young batters handle swing and seam well, this could mark a bright new chapter in Indian cricket’s future,” he said.

With the team transitioning into a new leadership phase and youngsters looking to cement their place, all eyes are now on how the squad handles the pressure and seizes the opportunity to shine on English soil.
