Mangaluru, Jun 14: Incessant rains in various parts of Mangaluru, including Pumpwell, Bikarnakatte, Kaikamba, and other city areas, have once again exposed the poor state of the city’s drainage system. Rainwater overflowed onto roads and gushed into homes and shops, causing distress to residents and traders alike.
A video captured from the stretch between Jayashree Gate and Bikarnakatte shows stormwater flowing unchecked along the road, with no proper drainage in place to divert it. Residents allege that despite repeated complaints to authorities, the issue remains unresolved.

"How many times have I told them to fix the drainage near Bikarnakatte? Due to their negligence, water entered homes and shops, and people are forced to bear the losses," a local resident lamented.
Particularly affected is the area from Kaikamba to the Bikarnakatte junction, where there is reportedly no proper stormwater drain. With heavy rainfall, water has been directly entering homes, leaving residents furious and helpless.
Citizens questioned the moral accountability of officials, especially when taxes are regularly collected from the public. “Despite collecting high taxes, such conditions prevail. It is shameful,” said a resident.
The residents have demanded urgent action to construct and repair stormwater drains to prevent recurring flooding during the monsoon.
The heavy rain that lashed the city caused the collapse of a retaining wall behind the Sundari Apartment near Kadri Shivabhag.
The wall, along with a tree, fell onto the apartment premises, resulting in damage to the building’s structure. While no casualties have been reported, the incident has raised safety concerns among residents in the area.
