Rainwater floods homes and shops in Mangaluru; residents blame poor drainage

Mangaluru, Jun 14: Incessant rains in various parts of Mangaluru, including Pumpwell, Bikarnakatte, Kaikamba, and other city areas, have once again exposed the poor state of the city’s drainage system. Rainwater overflowed onto roads and gushed into homes and shops, causing distress to residents and traders alike.

A video captured from the stretch between Jayashree Gate and Bikarnakatte shows stormwater flowing unchecked along the road, with no proper drainage in place to divert it. Residents allege that despite repeated complaints to authorities, the issue remains unresolved.

"How many times have I told them to fix the drainage near Bikarnakatte? Due to their negligence, water entered homes and shops, and people are forced to bear the losses," a local resident lamented.

Particularly affected is the area from Kaikamba to the Bikarnakatte junction, where there is reportedly no proper stormwater drain. With heavy rainfall, water has been directly entering homes, leaving residents furious and helpless.

Citizens questioned the moral accountability of officials, especially when taxes are regularly collected from the public. “Despite collecting high taxes, such conditions prevail. It is shameful,” said a resident.

The residents have demanded urgent action to construct and repair stormwater drains to prevent recurring flooding during the monsoon.

The heavy rain that lashed the city caused the collapse of a retaining wall behind the Sundari Apartment near Kadri Shivabhag.

The wall, along with a tree, fell onto the apartment premises, resulting in damage to the building’s structure. While no casualties have been reported, the incident has raised safety concerns among residents in the area.

Main reason is because of water passageways both sides of the roads are covered with concrete/Granite slabs for widening the roads by some Feet as a provision for oneway traffic without widening to natural water drain size.

Smart City ? First let them solve water logging issue then build smart city. A city without proper planning is as bad as a disaster! According to my knowledge few areas in Mangalore used to submerge in heavy rain around Attavar, some low lying areas & field on the way to Ullal and Kavoor etc. what is happenin now is simply water is flowing on the roads even on high elevated roads/areas.

When such incidence takes place due to heavy rains the MCC engineers visit such places and do something to avoid this by taking proper methods so that such tragedies may not occur again. Even MCC Commissioner or DC, Mangalore visit/inspects and find out solutions. Our smart City has become worst City now.

Most of the natural drains or p water passageways are being covered with concret slabs without widening the passageways, Hence the water flow is restricted to flow and occupies open space on roads to reach its last point i.e. rivers.

More water will flow on roads than drain because of the Smart City propaganda.
