London, Jun 19: As England prepare to take on India in a much-anticipated five-match Test series, legendary English cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has delivered a stinging critique of the team’s aggressive 'Bazball' approach, urging the side to show more cricketing "common sense."
In a hard-hitting column, Boycott did not hold back, saying that while England's fearless style under coach Brendon McCullum has at times been "thrilling and super enjoyable," it has also cost them crucial matches due to reckless batting.
“England should beat India if they temper Bazball and use some common sense,” Boycott wrote, pointing out that England’s overly aggressive batting had failed to secure them a place in the last three World Test Championship finals, all of which were held in England.
“They should be embarrassed,” the former opener stated bluntly. “Their aim should be to make the next WTC final.”
He criticised the current team for being too rigid in their tactics. “At the moment, England are like a one-trick pony. It's Bazball or nothing. They don't want to change or learn from their losses,” Boycott said, suggesting that blind commitment to entertainment over results is not sustainable at the highest level.
As the new WTC cycle begins with this India series, Boycott urged the England team to prioritise winning over showmanship: “Being a winner is better than being known as an entertainer. If you can do both, that's a bonus.”
