Mumbai, Jun 20: In a fresh blow to Maharashtra’s law enforcement circles, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police on Wednesday took into custody Purushottam Chavan — husband of senior IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar — in connection with a Rs 7.42 crore cheating case.

According to EOW officials, Chavan, who was already under arrest in a similar high-profile scam last month, is now accused of duping a Surat-based businessman and several others under the pretext of offering land parcels from a so-called “government quota” at discounted prices.

Chavan is alleged to have assured the victims that he could facilitate plot allocations using his “influence,” and also falsely promised procurement contracts for supplying T-shirts to the Maharashtra Police Academy. Believing the assurances, the businessman and others reportedly transferred a total of Rs 7.42 crore to him.

This development comes close on the heels of Chavan’s earlier arrest by the EOW, where he was accused of swindling nearly Rs 24.78 crore from multiple individuals by promising them flats in Mumbai, Thane, and Pune under government schemes.

Officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further links and potential victims are being identified. While IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar is not named as an accused, the case has stirred significant discussion within administrative circles.

The case continues to be under the scanner of the Mumbai EOW, with more revelations expected in the coming days.
