Mangaluru, Jun 25: A meeting of the Dakshina Kannada District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was held on Tuesday at the deputy commissioner's office under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner (DC) Darshan H V.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC stated that all animal sale shops operating in the district must mandatorily register with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He warned that pet shop owners operating without SPCA registration must complete the registration process within the given time limit, failing which legal action will be initiated.

He emphasized that animal protection is a significant responsibility, and strict action should be taken against those committing acts of cruelty against animals in the district. The discussion also included the implementation of a plan to set up a ‘Prani Mitra’ (Friend of Animals) hospital in Bondanthila village of Mangaluru taluk to provide necessary care for stray animals. In addition, the need for crematorium facilities for animals that die due to road accidents or other causes was also discussed.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr Arun Kumar Shetty, deputy director of the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services, said that awareness programs are being conducted for the public and school students to foster compassion and humanity towards voiceless animals. He added that, in coordination with relevant departments at the state and district levels, awareness is being raised about the enforcement of animal welfare laws established by the Animal Welfare Board.
The meeting was also attended by superintendent of police Dr Arun K, ACP Geetha Kulkarni, Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Ravichandra Naik, committee member Suma R Nayak, and others.
