Udupi, Jun 27: In a remarkable celebration of literature and learning, National PU College, Barkur, hosted one of India's most distinguished literary figures on Friday, Jun 27 morning. Damodar Mauzo, the acclaimed Konkani writer and recipient of the prestigious 57th Jnanpith Award (2022), visited the educational institution, transforming an ordinary Friday into an extraordinary literary milestone for the college community.
The event, aptly themed ‘A day to inspire, interact & celebrate literature,’ brought together students, faculty, and dignitaries in the college auditorium for what proved to be an intellectually stimulating and culturally enriching experience.

The proceedings commenced with traditional reverence as Aishwarya Shetty and Rakshitha, lecturers in physics and sociology respectively, rendered a melodious Sanskrit shloka, creating an atmosphere of serenity and scholarly devotion. The prayer session set the tone for a day dedicated to celebrating the power of words and literature.
Usha Kiran Shetty, principal of National PU College, extended a warm welcome to the distinguished gathering, which included not only Damodar Mauzo but also guest of honour Kishore Gonsalves, a celebrated poet and story writer who has earned recognition with the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Award for his acclaimed short story collection "Rupnni."
Ashwini Kanchan, lecturer in English, served as the programme's anchor. Soumya, lecturer in biology, provided the audience with a comprehensive overview of Damodar Mauzo's illustrious career.
Damodar Mauzo's literary journey spans decades of exceptional contribution to Indian literature. As a Sahitya Academy Awardee (1983) and the distinguished recipient of the 57th Jnanpith Award (2022), his work has significantly enriched Konkani literature while contributing to India's broader literary landscape. His writings, known for their depth and cultural authenticity, have established him as a towering figure in contemporary Indian literature.
The highlight of the morning was Damodar Mauzo's address to the students and faculty. Speaking in clear, accessible English to ensure maximum connection with his predominantly rural student audience, the literary master delivered a speech that was both inspiring and profoundly practical.
His central message emphasized the cultivation of reading habits, the development of creative writing skills, and the importance of critical thinking in academic and personal growth. Perhaps most memorably, he encouraged the young audience to ‘search the invisible and touch the non-existent’ a poetic call to explore beyond the obvious and reach for the intangible realms of imagination and creativity.
The address was punctuated with personal anecdotes and real-life experiences from his writing career, offering students rare insights into the creative process and the dedication required for literary excellence. His words appeared to strike a chord with the audience, many of whom seemed visibly moved and inspired by his presence and message.
The college administration ensured that the visit was marked with appropriate honors befitting Mauzo's stature in Indian literature. Archibald Furtado, Administrative Coordinator of National Group of Educational Institutions, Barkur, presented the distinguished guest with a memento and ceremonially draped him with a traditional shawl symbol of respect and gratitude.
In his presidential address, Archibald Furtado highlighted Damodar Mauzo's remarkable linguistic versatility, noting his fluency in Konkani, English, Hindi, and Marathi, along with his understanding of Kannada. "Today is a proud moment for all of us, A towering personality in literature visited this temple of learning and enlightened us with his inspiring and insightful message."
The diverse gathering included Hemavathy P S, headmistress of the High School section, faculty members from various departments, and an enthusiastic student body that participated with keen interest throughout the programme.
