Graphic designer held for theft of jewellery, cash worth Rs 6.8 lac in Mira Road

Thane, Jun 30: A 26-year-old graphic designer was arrested by the Mira Road police for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and cash worth Rs 6.8 lac from a residence in Mira Road, Thane district. The theft occurred during the intervening night of June 24 and 25, police sources said.

According to Senior Police Inspector Meghana Burande, the complainant, a 58-year-old woman, was woken up by the sound of a cat entering her house. Upon checking, she discovered that her bedroom cupboard had been broken into and a bag containing 77 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 9,000 in cash was missing.

Acting swiftly, the Mira Road police registered a case under sections 305(a) (theft in a dwelling house) and 331 (house-trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a probe.
"Through meticulous efforts and technical inputs, our detection team managed to trace and apprehend the suspect within 24 hours," Burande said.

The accused, a graphic designer of Nepali origin, was residing in the same locality. During interrogation, police recovered 69 grams of the stolen gold jewellery worth Rs 5.52 lac from him. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining stolen items.

Further investigation revealed that the accused has a criminal record, with two previous FIRs registered against him at the Mira Road police station.

The case has once again brought to light the importance of neighbourhood vigilance and the swift response of local police in tracking down habitual offenders.
