Mangaluru, Jul 1: A man has reportedly lost Rs 44 lac in a fraudulent investment scheme operated through an Instagram account named ‘Humshafare’.
According to a complaint filed at the CEN Crime Police Station, the victim said he was contacted in December last year by an individual identifying himself as Mahesh Poonia through the Instagram page. The accused later continued the conversation on WhatsApp, offering what he claimed were lucrative investment opportunities.
Between January 15 and 17, the complainant transferred Rs 44 lac in multiple installments to various bank accounts shared by the accused. Though he initially managed to withdraw a small sum, the accused soon began pressuring him to invest additional money to unlock the full returns.
Sensing something amiss, the victim consulted friends and soon realised he had been duped. He then approached the police and filed a formal complaint.
A case has been registered, and investigations are underway to trace the fraudster and recover the lost amount.
How to stay safe
Vigilance is the key to avoiding such scams. If you receive such calls, never fall for the trap. Remember, police officials never initiate cases online or ask for money.
Most importantly, the term “digital arrest” is fabricated by scammers and does not exist in Indian law. If someone threatens you with it, it is undoubtedly a scam.
Additionally, never share bank details, OTPs, or other sensitive information over phone calls or messages, regardless of the caller’s claims. If you suspect a scam, report it to the authorities and your bank immediately. Quick action can help prevent further losses.
