Mumbai, Jul 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert for Mumbai till July 5, as the city braces for continued moderate to heavy rainfall triggered by the advancing southwest monsoon.
An orange alert was also issued for Mumbai, Thane and Pune districts until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, signalling intense downpours that could exceed 15 mm per hour, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning in isolated pockets.
As per the IMD classification, rainfall is termed:
• Heavy when 24-hour precipitation measures between 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm
• Moderate when it crosses 15 mm in a day
The IMD, in its latest bulletin, cautioned that the rains may lead to minor waterlogging, tree or pole collapses, and localised power outages in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Farmers have also been advised to take protective measures as scattered crop damage cannot be ruled out.
The persistent rainfall over Mumbai and surrounding regions is attributed to the active monsoon systems prevailing over the Arabian Sea and western Maharashtra.
Citizens have been urged to stay alert, avoid non-essential travel during peak rainfall hours, and monitor updates from official sources. Emergency services are on standby across the city and adjoining districts.
