Jammu, Jul 8: In two separate tragic incidents, a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper and an Indian Army soldier died of gunshot wounds under mysterious circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting investigations into possible suicides.

In the first incident on Monday, BSF constable Mridul Dass reportedly shot himself with his service rifle while on sentry duty at Malluchak Border Outpost in the Ramgarh sector along the International Border in Samba district. Officials said Dass was found dead at the post, but the motive behind the extreme step remains unclear. His body has been moved to the Community Health Centre in Ramgarh for post-mortem, and police have initiated inquest proceedings.

In a similar case late on Saturday, a soldier from the 54 Rashtriya Rifles, stationed in Solki village of Rajouri district, also died from a gunshot wound believed to be self-inflicted. He was on sentry duty at the company headquarters, located about 40 km from Rajouri town, when his colleagues heard a gunshot. Rushing to the scene, they found him dead on the spot. Police have not yet determined whether the death was a suicide or the result of an accidental discharge. An official inquiry is underway.

These incidents have reignited concerns over the mental health and well-being of armed forces personnel deployed in high-stress zones. Over the years, multiple cases of suicide or erratic behaviour among security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have been linked to factors such as extended separation from families, long and strenuous duty hours, isolation in hostile environments, and insufficient mental health support.

Mental health experts and internal reviews have long pointed to the need for sustained reforms to mitigate psychological stress in the forces. In response, the armed forces have implemented several measures including better recreational facilities, shorter duty shifts, more frequent leave, and increased interaction between personnel and commanding officers through regular ‘Darbars’ and open forums.

These initiatives have led to improved morale and fostered stronger ties between the security forces and the civilian population in the region. In recent years, security personnel have become more actively involved in community welfare—extending assistance during natural disasters and engaging warmly with local children—reshaping their image from enforcers to protectors and allies.

However, the recent deaths are a stark reminder that challenges remain. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of mental health support and early intervention as key priorities for maintaining the well-being of personnel operating under constant stress.
