Unwed mother sells newborn for Rs 50,000 in Sivasagar; Three including ASHA worker arrested

Assam, Jul 11: In a deeply disturbing incident, a 22-year-old unwed mother allegedly sold her newborn baby for Rs 50,000 shortly after delivering at the Sivasagar Civil Hospital in Assam. The shocking case has led to the arrest of three individuals, including the infant's mother, her own mother, and an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker.

According to official sources, the young woman gave birth to a baby on June 23. Despite counseling by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which had intervened during their visit to the hospital and urged the woman not to proceed with any such illegal activity, the infant was reportedly sold before the mother and child could be formally discharged.

The authorities were alerted about the suspected sale only on July 10, prompting swift action. However, by the time they conducted inquiries, the baby was missing, and its whereabouts are still unknown.

A formal complaint was registered with the local police, following which all three involved were taken into custody. Police have launched a probe into the incident and are working to trace the child.

Speaking to media, police sources stated that the CWC had attempted to dissuade the family from making such a decision. Despite this, the sale was allegedly carried out secretly, raising serious questions about oversight and safety mechanisms in government hospitals.

Authorities are continuing investigations to identify any additional individuals involved and ensure the safe recovery of the child.
