Kudermetova & Mertens capture Wimbledon doubles crown in stunning comeback

Daijiworld Media Network - London

London, Jul 13: No. 8 seeds Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens lifted the 2025 Wimbledon ladies’ doubles title after a stirring 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback win over No. 4 seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko in a thrilling final on Centre Court.

The duo showed remarkable grit after a shaky start, overturning a one-set deficit and rallying from 2-4 down in the deciding set to win four consecutive games and seal the championship in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Kudermetova closed out the match with a decisive volley winner, clinching her first-ever Grand Slam doubles title.

For Mertens, the win marks a fifth major doubles title and her second Wimbledon crown. In a twist of tennis fate, her first Wimbledon victory in 2021 came alongside Hsieh, when the pair defeated Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina in a heartbreaker.

The final was a rollercoaster: after dropping the first set, Kudermetova and Mertens broke Hsieh twice in the second to even the match. With Mertens' consistency from the baseline and Kudermetova’s sharp play at the net, they began to dominate rallies. Yet, the final set tilted early in favor of Hsieh and Ostapenko, who surged ahead 4-2 before the eighth seeds wrestled back control.

Their victory is also a story of reunion and redemption. Kudermetova and Mertens, once one of the top teams in 2022 (winning the WTA Finals), split for two seasons before reuniting this spring. Since then, they’ve reached finals in Madrid and Rome, and have now peaked perfectly on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

For Ostapenko, the defeat stings even more as a win would have elevated her to WTA Doubles World No. 1. She and Hsieh had shown incredible form, particularly in the first set, where they won five consecutive games from 1-4 down. But under pressure, Kudermetova and Mertens proved the steadier pair.

With this win, Mertens cements her place among the elite of doubles tennis, while Kudermetova finally claims the major title that eluded her four years ago.
