Lucknow, Jul 28: The Lucknow Police have filed an FIR against Islamic cleric Maulana Sajid Rashidi for making allegedly objectionable and misogynistic remarks against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and MP Dimple Yadav, sparking outrage across political and social circles.
The controversial comments were made during a televised debate and on other public platforms, drawing swift backlash for being derogatory, inflammatory, and potentially communal in nature.
The complaint was lodged on Saturday by SP leader Pravesh Yadav, a resident of Vikalp Khand, Gomtinagar, who alleged that Maulana Sajid’s statements were not only an attack on Dimple Yadav’s dignity but also had the potential to fuel religious disharmony.

“This is not just about Dimple Yadav. Such comments insult every woman and pose a threat to social harmony,” Pravesh Yadav stated in his written complaint.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Zone) Shashank Singh confirmed that a case has been registered at the Vibhutikhand police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
• Section 79 – outraging the modesty of a woman
• Section 196 – promoting enmity between different groups
• Section 299 – hurting religious sentiments
• Section 352 – intentional insult
Additionally, Section 67 of the IT Act (transmitting obscene or offensive content electronically) has also been invoked.
What Sparked the Controversy:
The storm erupted after Maulana Sajid Rashidi, during a television discussion, made offensive remarks about Dimple Yadav’s appearance, particularly criticising her for not covering her head during a Samajwadi Party meeting at Sansad Marg mosque in Delhi. His remarks, perceived by many as deeply sexist and regressive, included a slur that ignited widespread condemnation.
The meeting in question was attended by Dimple Yadav, SP president Akhilesh Yadav, and MP Iqra Hasan. Photos from the gathering circulated online and on news channels, with Rashidi allegedly targeting Dimple Yadav based on these visuals.
Political and Public Backlash:
Leaders across parties, women’s rights groups, and civil society organisations have denounced the remarks, labeling them anti-women and provocative. Calls have grown louder for strict legal action against the cleric, citing concerns about gender bias, religious intolerance, and the misuse of public platforms.
As investigations continue, police officials have assured that the matter will be handled with due seriousness, reflecting a growing consensus that hate speech—especially against women in public life—must not be tolerated.
