Mumbai, Aug 13: Veteran actor Mukesh Rishi, known for his commanding on-screen presence, brings Pakistan’s former military ruler Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq to life in the newly released political thriller series Salakaar, now streaming on JioHotstar. Drawing from his own army background, Rishi says the role allowed him to tap into his roots and understanding of military life.

Salakaar, produced by Sphereorigins and directed by Faruk Kabir, follows the gripping journey of an Indian spy navigating a dangerous mission in Pakistan, set against the tense backdrop of espionage, betrayal, and history-laced drama.

Speaking about what drew him to the project, Rishi shared:

“When I heard the story, I found it very interesting. The kind of research Faruk Kabir had done and the professionalism he brought to the project made me want to work with him.”

Portraying Zia-ul-Haq, one of Pakistan’s most controversial leaders, Rishi delves into a character historically linked to many of India’s geopolitical challenges. Zia, known for implementing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s infamous “bleed India with a thousand cuts” doctrine, was a pivotal figure in shaping South Asia’s volatile dynamics. Rishi acknowledged the weight of the role, saying:

“I tried to do some research online. My army background gave me an edge in understanding the military aspect. We paid close attention to Zia’s appearance and mannerisms using available photos and footage.”

Rishi also emphasized the importance of a tightly written series:

“After so many years in the industry, I believe each episode should hold its own. The story doesn’t need to drag — it should be concise and engaging for the audience.”

He praised the ensemble cast for elevating the narrative:

“Everyone in the series is a capable actor. Sometimes it’s not about how much screen time someone has — it’s about how effectively they use it. I think everyone gave their best.”

Salakaar blends historical fiction with thrilling storytelling, offering viewers a high-stakes spy drama rooted in real-world events. With Mukesh Rishi's intense portrayal of Zia-ul-Haq, the series promises a compelling look at a dark chapter in India-Pakistan relations.
