Barcelona, Aug 13: Marcus Rashford has hit out at Manchester United’s management approach, saying the club’s failure to stick to a clear, long-term vision has left them stuck in "no man’s land." Now on loan at FC Barcelona, the 26-year-old forward questioned whether the much-talked-about transition post-Sir Alex Ferguson has even truly begun.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Rashford reflected on his time at United and the club’s ongoing struggles to re-establish dominance in the Premier League.
“With any successful team, there’s a set of principles that players and managers follow, no matter who comes in,” he said. “At United, I feel like we’ve just been hungry to win — but it’s been reactive. The direction keeps changing. You can’t win the league like that.”
Rashford, who made his senior debut in 2016 and played 426 games for the Red Devils, was loaned to Aston Villa in early 2025 after falling out of favour under new head coach Ruben Amorim. He later moved to Barcelona on loan in July.
The England international pointed to Liverpool as a blueprint, recalling how the Merseyside club backed Jürgen Klopp through early struggles before reaping success. “People say United’s been in transition for years — but to be in transition, you have to start it. I don’t think we ever really did,” Rashford added.
He emphasized that constant managerial changes and shifting strategies have caused confusion and inconsistency. “We’ve had so many different managers, different ideas, different styles. You end up stuck in between it all.”
Despite Rashford’s departure, United have been busy rebuilding their attack. The club has brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško to bolster their forward line ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17 at Old Trafford.
